How to store matcha after opening

Once opened, matcha deteriorates most rapidly from humidity, light, and air exposure. Due to its fine particle size and large surface area, powder stored beside a hob or left unsealed will quickly lose its vibrant freshness and form stubborn clumps. Proper storage is not about keeping it unchanged forever, but about limiting ambient exposure between opening and finishing the tin.

Ensure your measuring spoon is completely dry before each use, and reseal the inner pouch or lid immediately afterwards. Store containers in a cool, dry place free from strong kitchen aromas. If retrieving matcha from the fridge, allow the sealed pack to return fully to room temperature before opening, preventing ambient moisture from condensing on the cold powder. Modest tins suit occasional home drinkers best, whereas commercial cafes should decant into weekly working batches and record opening dates.

If the powder develops off-notes, shows signs of damp, or arrives with compromised packaging, pause use and contact your supplier. Storage practices cannot rescue powder that has already absorbed moisture, nor do they verify a batch's testing status. Refrigeration is not an automatic solution. Moving unsealed powder in and out of a fridge creates temperature shifts that can draw condensation into the container; if chilling is chosen, the package must warm thoroughly to room temperature before being unsealed. Noting the date of opening alongside the date of last use helps households assess whether a smaller pack size would be more practical.
