The September 2026 Xinyang Maojian Index released by the China Tea Marketing Association was 52.3. The index was jointly compiled by the China Tea Marketing Association, the Xinyang Tea Marketing Association, and Xinyang International Tea City. In September, the Xinyang Maojian market showed a combined change of a marked increase in sales volume and a marked decline in the average price: sales volume was 35.9 tonnes, up 54.9% year on year; sales value was RMB 25.876 million, down 0.6% year on year; and the average price was RMB 1,000.60 per kilogram, down 35.8% year on year. The fact that the growth in sales volume was far greater than the change in sales value, together with the relatively large decline in the average price, was the key to understanding the change in that month’s index.[1]

Data by grade further explained the transaction structure. In September, premium-grade Maojian sales volume was 2.96 tonnes at an average price of RMB 3,892 per kilogram; special-grade Maojian sales volume was 3.73 tonnes at an average price of RMB 2,444 per kilogram; Grade 1 Maojian sales volume was 3.68 tonnes at an average price of RMB 848 per kilogram; Grade 2 Maojian sales volume was 1.97 tonnes at an average price of RMB 393 per kilogram; Grade 3 Maojian sales volume was 3.32 tonnes at an average price of RMB 233 per kilogram; and Grade 4 Maojian sales volume was 10.21 tonnes at an average price of RMB 59 per kilogram. Grade 4 Maojian had markedly higher sales volume than the other grades, and its average price was also the lowest among all grades; the average prices of premium grade and special grade were above RMB 3,000 and RMB 2,000 respectively.[1]

These data indicate that the growth in Xinyang Maojian transaction volume in September was mainly accompanied by increased supply of middle- and lower-grade products with low average prices, while higher-grade products still maintained relatively high unit prices but accounted for a limited share of sales volume. The 54.9% year-on-year increase in sales volume and the 0.6% year-on-year decrease in sales value mean that the month’s transaction structure tilted toward grades with lower average prices. For those following green tea prices and demand structure, this set of index and grade-level data provides a direct reference for that month’s market, while subsequent changes still need to be observed in conjunction with the next issue of the index.[1]
